Most importantly, I crocheted them.
The pattern I used is Nubby Brim Cloche, which I came across while searching through crocheted hat patterns for bulky yarn in Ravelry. There were several, but I really liked the shape of this one. The pattern creator Eileen Tepper also has an Etsy site filled with hats, hat patterns and jewelry, among other things.
The first one I made was with leftovers from Jo-ann’s Rainbow Sensations (from a poncho). The only real modifications made, aside from a different yarn, was that after I tied the bow I didn’t like the ends, so I tucked them in, undid the fabric, cut the yarn and weaved in the ends:
As much as I love how it turned out, I have loads of hats already. My cousin’s daughter, however, is just starting high school and might like it, so I’m going to offer it to her. No idea if this is the sort of hat that she’d like, but you never know. I think it would look good on her.
The second one I made with leftovers of Bernat Solo yarn, as well as some old Phentex yarn (which I used with the yarn held triple) from a (frogged) project so old, it predates this blog:
There were a few more changes this time. The yarn made a thicker fabric, so I stopped after row 21. Also, I didn’t want to do the ribbon this time since I was happy with how it was like that. This one I’m probably going to keep for myself.
Both of them were incredibly quick projects. One moment I had yarn and a 6.5mm crochet hook, the next, boom!, two hats.
